Green Project? Green Translator!

When I read articles on the Internet that are posted in “green“ blogs or relevant coverage in the media I am always pleased to see how much the consciousness of European people has evolved since my youth with regards to the environment, organic food and green products. However, I can imagine that it is still a bold move for manufactures of organic or green products, who have secured their share in their domestic market with hard work, to expand their business operations into foreign markets. If they want to go into the German market they cannot possibly approach it with an English website and English promotional materials. Although a fair few Germans speak or at least read English they still won’t be very impressed if the supplier hasn’t taken the trouble to make life easier for them by communicating with them in German. Between those Germans who are put off and those who know no English a lot of business will be lost. Therefore, it is imperative to have all the marketing materials and websites translated properly and professionally.

But if the translator has no familiarity with the target market and/or no sympathy with “green” objectives how good will that translation be? What is needed is a “green” translator. Here is where I come into play. Although I am certainly not coloured green I do have a dark secret or, more accurately, a “dark green” secret!

Übersetzungsmaschinen und Sonderrabatt für Übersetzungen

Das Internet bietet nicht nur Zugriff auf so ziemlich alle Informationen, die Mann/Frau heutzutage benötigt, sondern gibt uns auch die Möglichkeit, diese Informationen (Sätze oder sogar ganze Webseiten) kostenlos in Fremdsprachen oder aus einer Fremdsprache in die Muttersprache übersetzen zu lassen. Sie finden im Internet etliche maschinelle Übersetzungstools – wie z.B. die Google Translate und Babel Fish Übersetzungsmaschinen – mit denen Sie kostenlos den Text eines Dokuments grob übersetzen lassen können, um eine Idee von der Aussage seines Inhalts zu bekommen.
Aber selbst die leistungsstärkste und modernste Übersetzungssoftware ist nicht annähernd in der Lage, die akkurate, flüssige Übersetzung und Sprachgewandtheit eines professionellen Übersetzers zu erreichen, und diese Übersetzungstools machen ständig ganz grundsätzliche Fehler, die einem professionellen Übersetzer niemals unterlaufen würden.

Diese maschinellen Übersetzungen können recht hilfreich sein, wenn man sich selbst einen ungefähren Eindruck von der Aussage eines fremdsprachlichen Textes verschaffen möchte, aber nicht, wenn man etwas in einer fremden Sprache ausdrücken oder eine Information übermitteln will. Eine automatische Übersetzung ist äußerst schwierig, da die Bedeutung der Worte abhängig vom Kontext ist, in dem sie verwendet werden, den die Übersetzungssoftware natürlich nicht erfassen kann. Ein Übersetzungstool wie Google Translate liefert somit u. U. recht „abenteuerliche“ Übersetzungen wie:

Der englischer Satz: “Don’t put off to tomorrow what you can do today”
wird übersetzt ins Deutsche:
„Nicht die lange Bank geschoben wird, was Sie tun können, heute“
diese deutsche Übersetzung wieder zurück ins Englische übersetzt lautet dann:
“Not long will be shelved, what you can do today.”

oder:

„Der Gründer W. Herzog hat Transparenz in den Mittelpunkt der Produktbeschreibungen gestellt. So erhalten die Nutzer/Shopper neben Preis und Produktbild auch Informationen über den Nachhaltigkeitsfaktor der vorgestellten Produkte.“
wird übersetzt ins Englische:
“The founder of W. Herzog has transparency at the heart of the Product made. To get the user / shopper addition to price and product image and information about the sustainability factor of the presented products.”
diese englische Übersetzung wieder zurück ins Deutsche übersetz lautet dann:
„Der Gründer von W. Herzog hat Transparenz in den Mittelpunkt des Produkts aus. Um die Benutzer / Shopper Neben Preis- und Produkt-Bild und Informationen über die Nachhaltigkeit von der präsentierten Produkte.“

Wie Sie sehen, ist das Übersetzungsergebnis leicht befremdend, mit etwas Phantasie können Sie sich jedoch zusammenreimen, was im Ausgangstext ausgesagt wurde. Jedenfalls können Sie auf die oben aufgezeigte Weise (Text vom Übersetzungstool in die Fremdsprache und dann wieder zurück in die Ausgangssprache übersetzen lassen) herausfinden, inwieweit die Übersetzung, die Sie mithilfe eines Übersetzungstools erhalten, die ursprünglich gegebene Aussage eines Textes widerspiegelt.

Es ist jedoch ganz offensichtlich, dass Sie sich auf maschinelle Übersetzungen nicht verlassen können, wenn Sie eine fehlerfreie, akkurate Übersetzung benötigen. Wenn Sie also die Übersetzung eines offiziellen Dokuments (z.B. eines Geschäftsbriefs) benötigen, mit einem Text in einer Fremdsprache glänzen möchten, wie im Fall einer Dissertation, eines Referats, einer Hochzeitsrede oder auch eines persönlichen Briefes oder Email an angeheiratete Verwandte oder Freunde, die Ihrer Sprache nicht mächtig sind, um nur ein paar Beispiele zu nennen, dann sollten Sie unbedingt den Service eines professionellen Übersetzers in Anspruch nehmen.

Dies ist natürlich im Gegensatz zu den kostenlosen Übersetzungsmaschinen mit Gebühren verbunden und nicht jeder kann sich den Service einer Übersetzungsagentur leisten, deren Dienste in erster Linie auf die Bedürfnisse von Unternehmen und professionellen Organisationen abgezielt sind, was sich in ihren Preisen widerspiegelt. Machine Translation Tools and Discounted Rates …

Nowadays, the Internet not only provides access to the information we need but also offers the opportunity to have this information (sentences or even whole websites) translated into foreign languages or from a foreign language into one’s mother tongue free of charge. On the Internet you can find numerous free online translation tools, like the Google Translate and Yahoo Babel Fish translation systems, which you can use for a rough translation of a document to get an idea what this text is talking about.
However, even today’s most powerful and sophisticated translation software is not capable of even vaguely approaching the fluency of a native speaker or the accuracy and skills of a professional translator. Translation tools also throw up fundamental errors which a professional translator would never be prone to.

Although these machine translations can be quite useful if you want to get an idea of the contents or information in a foreign language text, their translations are useless when you want to express yourself in a foreign language (like in a personal letter) or want to convey some business or personal information. For an automatic machine translation to be accurate is very difficult, if not impossible, because the meaning of words always depends on the context in which they are used and this is too complex for translation software. A translation tool like Google Translate sometimes provides some rather “imaginative” translations as for example:

The English sentence, “Don’t put off to tomorrow what you can do today”
translated into German as, „Nicht die lange Bank geschoben wird, was Sie tun können, heute“ and this German translation translated back into English will then read, “Not long will be shelved, what you can do today.” …

How to turn an English actor into a German in one week !

Sometimes I get an “emergency job” which really requires some resourcefulness on my part in order to come up with a feasible solution for the client’s problem. This was the case when a theatre group contacted me because they had decided – a week before the debut performance of their latest play which was set in World War Two – that it would be more effective to have the lines spoken by the German soldiers spoken in German rather than in English.

Unfortunately for them, not only did none of them speak German but they didn’t even have the faintest idea how to pronounce the simplest words in German. So they asked me whether it was possible not only to get the lines translated into German but also to have a phonetic transcription of the individual words so they would have a better idea of how to pronounce them. I had no problem with their request but very much doubted that, even with a phonetic transcription, the actors would be able to make the lines sound really “German”.

Actors often spend a great deal of time with a voice coach before they can convincingly express themselves as a “native speaker” of that language and not just sound silly (like the Irish-sounding Greeks in Oliver Stone’s film of Alexander the Great for instance). So I tried to come up with something better than phonetic transcription. Fortunately my partner is a musician and came up with the wonderful suggestion of recording me speaking the lines. He would then turn the recording into a good quality but small sized audio file that could be emailed. This would enable the actors to hear a native speaker speaking the lines and give them the opportunity to try and copy my pronunciation. I got in touch with the group and asked them whether they were okay with handling MP3 files. They were and they were delighted to get a recording of the lines as well as the written translation … and at no extra charge. If there were any Germans in the audience then I’m sure they would have been impressed that the actors were not just speaking English with dodgy German accents!

Das Übersetzen (einer einzelnen Textseite oder eines mehrseitigen Dokuments, eines Romans, eines Handbuchs, einer Reihe von Handbüchern oder Broschüren, von Marketingtexten, Computerspielen etc.) ist eine Arbeit, die von qualifizierten Linguisten ausgeführt werden muss. Um höchste Normen zu erreichen, übersetzen professionelle Übersetzer in der Regel nur in ihre Muttersprache – und ich denke, mein Nachname verrät, aus welchem Land ich komme! Wissenswertes über das Korrekturlesen
Ausgezeichnete Übersetzer erhalten sehr häufig Korrekturlesungs-Aufträge. Das Korrekturlesen ist erforderlich, um die Arbeit von weniger erprobten Übersetzern durch erfahrenere Kollegen dahingehend zu überprüfen, dass Aussage und Stil von Originaltext und Übersetzung exakt übereinstimmen. Dies kann erforderlich sein, weil der Übersetzer z.B. technisch sehr versiert ist, sein Stil aber zu wünschen lässt oder umgekehrt. Häufig steht eine Palette unterschiedlicher Worte oder Ausdrücke zur Auswahl und seltsamerweise sind einige Übersetzer – obwohl sie ihre Zweitsprache gut beherrschen – nicht sehr kreativ im Gebrauch ihrer Muttersprache! Hinzu kommt, dass einige Kunden, um ganz sicher zu gehen, alle ihre Projekte Korrektur lesen lassen.

Wie Sie meinen Übersetzungsservice nutzen
Der Kunde sendet das zu übersetzende Dokument zum Erhalt eines kostenlosen Kostenvoranschlages – heutzutage in der Regel per Email. Der erste Schritt besteht in der Identifizierung des Fachgebiets des Ausgangstextes (Terminologie und Fachumgangssprache) sowie des erforderlichen Referenzmaterials, zu dem auch mein selbst angelegtes, gewaltiges „Persönliches Wörterbuch“ und akkurate Internet-Referenzquellen gehören, um eine ausgezeichnete Übersetzung zu garantieren. Für jeden Kunden lege ich zur Gewährleistung der Begriffskonsistenz aller Projekte dieses Klienten ein spezifisches „Glossar“ der bevorzugten Terminologie an (es gibt gewöhnlich eine große Anzahl von Optionen im Deutschen!).

Der zweite Schritt ist die Erstellung des Kostenvoranschlages unter Berücksichtigung des Folgenden:

Was tun, wenn man eine deutsche Übersetzung seines Buches braucht, die den neuen Rechtschreibanforderungen des heutigen Deutschlands gerecht wird, und man selbst mit seiner Frau die letzten 53 Jahre in Kanada gelebt hat? Dies war das Problem, das sich Autor W. John Koch beim Schreiben der deutschen Version seines Bestsellers ‚NO ESCAPE’ stellte. Wie alle Dinge unterliegt auch unsere Sprache kontinuierlich Veränderungen, die über einen Zeitraum von fünfzig Jahren recht drastisch sein können (Ungläubige brauchen sich bloß alte Filmdialoge oder Werbespots anhören!). Bei uns in Deutschland kam es 1996 zur Rechtschreibreform und gibt es den zunehmenden Gebrauch von englischen Worten (scherzhaft „Neudeutsch“ genannt) wie auch neue Begriffe und linguistische Möglichkeiten, um Ideen zum Ausdruck zu bringen. Es ist Aufgabe eines Top-Übersetzers, all diesen Entwicklungen Rechnung zu tragen und diese Optionen dann in Beziehung zum Zielmarkt eines Textes zu setzen. Die Fertigstellung dieses Projekts nahm etliche Monate in Anspruch, da es bei einem Buch mit 371 Seiten offensichtlich eine Menge zu tun gibt.

What do you do if you want to get your book to read well in today’s Germany when you and your wife have lived in Canada for the last 53 years? This was the problem facing author John Koch in producing the German version of his incredible best-selling book ‘No Escape’ for German publication. No language is static and over the course of fifty years any language changes radically (just listen to old English radio announcements or adverts if you don’t believe this!). So he is going to give us some more stuff middle to end of next week, approx 3000 words, and INSISTS that the same translator does the job.
