Translation and Proofreading Service
Welcome to my website where you can see all the services I provide in translating English text into German text. Translating from English to German, whether it is a single document or multiple documents, a novel, a manual, collection of manuals or brochures, string files, computer games etc. is a specialist professional activity and to obtain the highest standards translators do not usually do reverse translation. This means that the translation is usually into the translator’s native language and I guess my surname gives mine away! However, I do undertake translations into English. In order to be absolutely sure that the finished English is as good as my finished German would be I have an English partner who proofreads the final document.
Things to know about proofreading
At the top level, translators get a lot of work on the proofreading side of things. This is where the work of one or more perhaps less trusted translators is checked through by a more experienced professional to ensure that the sense and style of the original is matched in the translation. This may be because a translator is very technical and not so good on style or vice versa. There can be a choice of many different words or expressions and oddly enough some translators, although they know their second language well, are not very creative in the use of their first language! In addition, some clients choose to have all their projects proofread just to be on the safe side.
How to use my translation service
The client sends the (English) source document for quotation - usually by email nowadays. The first step is to establish the nature of the source text (terminology and jargon) and reference material needed which includes my own massive German “personal dictionary” and accurate Internet reference-sources in order to guarantee an excellent translation. For each client I keep a record of the preferred terminology (there are usually a lot of options in German!) so that there is consistency across all the projects from that client.
The second step is the preparation of the quotation taking into account:
- Number of words
- Deadline
- Client’s specification
The quotation is usually provided the same day I received the English source text. Here are some of the areas in which companies, organisations or individuals have asked me to apply my skills:
- Translator and proofreader of marketing texts
- Literature including editing and proofreading
- Website texts
- Computer Software & other technical manuals
- Commercial & General Correspondence
- Computer-Games (commands, instructions, documentation etc.)
- See my other special fields here
Some jobs are more fun than others but I treat them all the same because at the end of the day I want all my clients to be happy with what I do and to recommend me to other people. Over the years it has been this aspect of personal recommendation that has provided me with lots of work and an enviable reputation for quality and service. I hope you find the site informative and by all means send me an email or give me a ring if you have any questions.
Best Regards Johanne Ostendorf
